The Mearim River Basin is considered the largest basin in the State of Maranhão and is located in the Amazonia-Cerrado transition zone. Knowledge of the boundaries of territorial units is essential for the management and planning of water resources. The use of Digital Elevation Model (MDE) in Geographic Information System (GIS) has advantages, in relation to digital resources such as speed and interaction with other databases contributing to agility in decision making for the Environmental Planning of river basins. This work aimed at the environmental characterization of the Mearim River Basin, in the State of the Maranhão. For this purpose, pre-existing thematic data were used of geology, geomorphology, pedology and vegetation, As well as data from the SRTM satellite for basin area assessment and drainage extension. The evaluation of the results indicated a great environmental diversity, with fourteen geological formations, ten geomorphological units, thirteen types of soil, nine types of vegetation and a relief that covers elevations between 38m below sea level up to 638m, in the southern region of the State. Thus, the great diversity of environmental attributes suggests a complex mechanism of environmental interaction which results in the existing landscape units in the basin, which requires complementary studies to understand these environmental mechanisms.
